nothing matters — notes on small systems

Colophon

Small on purpose.

Markup and styling

Every page is hand-written HTML5. There is one stylesheet, no framework, and no build step beyond a shell script that copies files into place. The type is the system sans-serif stack, so the site looks familiar on whatever device you are using rather than shipping a webfont for a paragraph of text.

JavaScript

None. The site is readable with scripting disabled, and nothing on the page needs to finish loading before it can be read.

Server

nginx over HTTPS with HTTP/2, serving static files from a small directory. TLS certificates are issued by Let's Encrypt and renewed automatically. The server is a single small instance; there is no CDN in front of it, so the latency you see is the latency of one machine.

Privacy

No analytics, no cookies, no third-party requests, no fonts loaded from elsewhere. Server logs record the usual request line and are rotated and discarded. If you read the site, the only party that knows is the server.

Colours

The palette is a warm off-white with a dark green accent, and a matching dark theme via prefers-color-scheme. Nothing is loaded from a design system; the variables are at the top of the stylesheet.
